Successful vernissage at the WORT office

On Tuesday, August 12, the WORT project invited the people of Schmalkalden to a very special vernissage. Under the title “Between New Land and Home”, hobby photographer Vasyl Ostapiuk presents his view of Schmalkalden – the city that has become his new home in recent years.

The WORT team first became aware of his photography in the summer of 2024, when Ostapiuk submitted a selection of his pictures to the photo marathon organized by the project. Soon after, the idea emerged to honor his perspective on Schmalkalden with a dedicated exhibition.

The 71-year-old, who previously worked in construction in Kyiv, has been living in Germany since fleeing via Poland. During his daily walks, he captures the city with his camera – attentive, curious, and always with a fresh eye for details that locals often overlook.

Around 25 visitors accepted the invitation to the exhibition opening. In an open and welcoming atmosphere, they engaged in conversations and got to know the artist personally. Among the guests were students and staff of the university, refugees, city residents, as well as well-known personalities and politicians of Schmalkalden. Vasyl Ostapiuk and the WORT-Team were particularly delighted by the visit of Mayor Thomas Kaminski and University Council Chairwoman Marina Heller.

Since Ostapiuk speaks little German, Ukrainian student Tetiana Oliichuk supported him by translating the many questions. Her commitment made communication possible and brought people closer together – for this, the WORT team extends its heartfelt thanks.

Since the vernissage, interested visitors have been coming daily to the WORT office to see the photographs and discover Schmalkalden anew through Ostapiuk’s lens. The exhibition will remain open until September 23, 2025, during office hours.
